Edge No Edge Press Release 8/8/23 - Kurt Larsen Studio
Edge No Edge, a show of paintings by Kurt Larsen is now open at the Los Angeles Fine Arts Building through October 21, 2023.
Art Meets Architecture and the Los Angeles Fine Arts Building proudly present Edge No Edge, featuring concentric stripe and fade paintings inspired by the artist’s early years painting surfboards during the dayglo ‘80s.
Kurt Larsen studied art at UCLA where he was influenced by Don Suggs and following in the footsteps of former mentor Peter Alexander earned an MFA there in 1993. Having last shown at the Hammer Museum in 1995, this new show marks Larsen’s return to the LA art scene, offering a glimpse into the perceptual experiences that emerge as light and spatial effects bend around tonal choices and hard-edge/no-edge transitions.
Edge No Edge showcases fifteen of Larsen’s acrylic on canvas paintings and three digital prints from scans of the paintings in progress. The work focuses on the difference between seeing and believing. “These paintings are optical tripwires that make me aware of my brain scanning and rescanning what I’m looking at which makes me question what triggers my emotional response to reality.”
Edge No Edge will run through October 21, 2023, at the Los Angeles Fine Arts Building, located at 811 W 7th St, Los Angeles, California 90017. The gallery is open Monday-Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm. A gallery opening with the artist is scheduled for Sunday, August 27, 2023, from 2-4pm hosted by #artmeetsarchitecture.
